Montgomery police officer charged in multiple âswattingâ calls
A Montgomery police officer has been arrested on misdemeanor charges stemming from multiple “swatting” incidents in Prattville.
Officer Christopher Eugene Sanspree Jr., 23, is charged with six counts of falsely reporting an incident. Those charges are misdemeanor crimes.
Prattville Police Chief Mark Thompson said in a press release investigators determined that Sanspree made several phone calls to Autauga County 911 to falsely report various incidents.
The chief told WSFA the bogus calls – which took place while Sanspree was on duty – ranged from reports of a person shot in a front yard to someone running around with a machete and people bleeding the street. He said Sanspree, after his arrest, made a statement that he thought it was funny.
“Swatting,” is a bogus phone call to report serious crimes taking place in an effort to draw police SWAT teams to a specific location.
The alleged incidents took place from October through December.
Sanspree was arrested Feb. 7. He was released from the Autauga County Jail after posting $6,000 cash bond.
“These falsely reported incidents were serious in nature and required a substantial amount of resources to respond to each call,’’ Thompson said in a news release, “as well as a considerable amount of investigative resources to be expended.”
Montgomery police Capt. Raymond Carson said Sanspree has been a Montgomery police officer for 28 months and at the time of his arrest was a patrol officer.
He is currently on administrative assignment, Carson said.
